When the Paperwork Has Gone Missing

Titles, registration cards and plates all go missing, and each has its own replacement path. The order of difficulty is worth knowing before you need one urgently: a registration card is quick, a plate is a form, and a duplicate title is the slow one.

Duplicate title

This is the document that proves ownership, so the DMV is appropriately careful with it. You apply as the registered owner, and if there is a lienholder recorded, the process involves them — a title with an outstanding lien is not simply reissued to you on request.

Allow real time. If you are selling a vehicle, start the duplicate title application before you advertise it, not after you have found a buyer standing in your driveway with cash. In the calls we take, a stalled private sale is nearly always a missing title nobody thought about until the last moment.

Duplicate registration card

Much simpler, and commonly available online. Worth doing promptly, since you are expected to be able to produce evidence of registration.

While you are at it: keep a photograph of the card on your phone as a backup. It does not replace the document, but it means you can read your own plate, VIN and expiry when you need them.

Replacement plates and stickers

Lost, stolen or damaged plates and month or year stickers each have their own application. If plates were stolen rather than lost, report the theft — plates on a stolen vehicle and stolen plates on another vehicle are both situations you want documented as not being yours.

Personalised plates have their own handling, so check the DMV's guidance for those specifically.

Where to do it

Several of these are available online through the DMV, which is faster than an office visit and does not consume an appointment slot. Some require an office visit or a DMV business partner. Check the DMV's own site for what your specific transaction allows — what is available online has expanded over time and old advice goes stale.

What this has to do with insurance

Nothing directly, with one practical exception: your insurer identifies your vehicle by VIN, and your VIN is on documents you may no longer have. If you are replacing paperwork, take the opportunity to check that the VIN on your policy matches the vehicle exactly. A transposed digit on a policy is invisible until a claim, and then it is not.

It is a thirty-second check and it is one of the few genuinely useful things to do while waiting for the DMV.
